Alter Circus is pleased to announce that the company will be in residence at the New England Center for Circus Arts (“NECCA”) this August to develop its show Hysterical for touring in 2019. Contemporary circus and experimental performance are the backdrop for Hysterical’s bold account of how women bend and bind themselves to society’s expectations. Hysterical deconstructs the mask that women wear to find safety, intimacy, and success in America. Jessica John, Alter Circus Company’s founder and director, explains that “the show is a postmodern contemporary circus production, which uses the human body as text and feminism as the lens to explore power, gender, and sexuality.”

The project will be supported in part by a National Endowment for the Arts “ArtWorks” grant. The residency will culminate in a presentation at NECCA on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at 7:30pm. The show runs approximately 90 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. A Q&A with the cast will follow the presentation. The show contains adult language and sexual content and is best suited for ages 13 and up.
